Volunteer Information

Individuals - Youth and Adults

Volunteering is a meaningful way to serve those in need, and earn community service hours. Individuals are needed to assist with administrative work, special events and projects, and sorting, boxing and repackaging food items among other activities.  Please note: Children under the age of 13 must have a parent or guardian present to supervise their activity.

Groups – Families, Corporate, Religious, Student, Civic

A group volunteer outing at Second Harvest Food Bank is an excellent team building activity and a meaningful way to involve employees/coworkers, members and friends in the fight against hunger. For families, volunteering at Second Harvest Food Bank is an opportunity to spend quality time together while teaching children the importance of service to others.

Volunteer groups should have a minimum of 8 and maximum of 25 individuals to work safely and efficiently in the Second Harvest Food Bank repack room. Groups of all sizes are needed for special events, gleaning projects and more.

School Groups – Volunteer Field Trips

A field trip to Second Harvest Food Bank offers a unique introduction to the issue of hunger for students in grades 4 – 12 and a volunteer opportunity in our warehouse.

The Second Harvest Food Bank field trip experience includes:

· Orientation and educational activity geared toward students

· Three hour volunteer work shift in the warehouse sorting and packing food

· Tour of the warehouse facility

Field trips are scheduled each Tuesday – Friday from 9 a.m. – noon and 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.

Adult supervision is required to ensure the safety of our visitors and productivity. We require:

· 1 chaperone per 5 students between the ages of 9 – 13 (4th – 8th grades)

· 1 chaperone per 10 students between the ages of 14 – 18 (9th – 12th grades

A minimum group of 10 students or maximum of 30 students is required for planning a volunteer field trip.

There is no cost for the volunteer field trip experience at Second Harvest Food Bank, however, donations of food and funds are welcomed. Consider this. At Second Harvest Food Bank, one dollar can feed a family of four. If each student donated just one dollar, a class of 25 could provide 100 meals in addition to the meals packed in our warehouse for distribution to families in need.
