Senior Brown Bag Program
The Senior Brown Bag Program is designed to provide nutritional support to seniors facing food insecurity in this climate of uncertainty. Specifically, the program will supplement existing senior meal services that are already helping mitigate hunger, namely the Meals on Wheels programs operating through localized senior centers. Like the Kids' Backpack Program, Second Harvest delivers a free box of easy-to-prepare, nutritionally appropriate food every Friday to low-income seniors in cooperation with participating senior centers. Each box contains roughly 12 low-sodium and low-sugar food items, including fresh produce when available. A newsletter is also included, offering information about nutrition and services for the elderly.
The Senior Brown Bag Program was first implemented in Orleans Parish, and has room for expansion as support for the program increases.
