Current Action Alert:
The November 23 deadline for the Super Committee to vote on their proposal is drawing near. As we wait for details to emerge from the Agriculture and Super Committees, we must continue to apply pressure with our message of no cuts to anti-hunger programs.
Time is running out. It is critical that every network member mobilize and weigh in with their delegation over the next two weeks because the window to influence the process is quickly closing—if there is a bill that emerges from the Super Committee, there will not be an opportunity to amend the legislation.
With little time remaining, our efforts need to shift to generating calls urging your Senators and Representatives to weigh in with the Super Committee. As a result, we will host a national call-in day on Wednesday, November 16. Please join us!
Please take a few minutes today or tomorrow to call your Congressmen at 1-877-698-8228 (This number will connect you to all of your congressmen) and deliver this simple message:
I am an employee/board member/supporter of Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana, which serves your constituents. There are two important issues currently before Congress that will affect hungry people in our community, and I’m counting on your support. First, I ask that you weigh in with the Super Committee to urge them to reject any proposals to cut anti-hunger programs like SNAP, TEFAP, CSFP, or WIC as part of any deficit reduction agreement. Second, I urge you to vote YES on H.R. 2112, which contains the FY12 Agriculture Appropriations bill. My food bank can barely meet the need right now, and cutting anti-hunger programs will increase hunger in our community.
Share! One call from each food bank is not enough. Share the action alert and our toll-free hotline, 1-877-698-8228, with your staff and local networks, and be sure to promote it on your social media channels. We need to generate thousands of calls nationwide to influence this process. Help us mobilize the public across the country in support of hungry Americans!
Write personal letters to Congress. To complement your calls, we are urging each food bank to write 50 letters to their Members of Congress as part of a national letter writing campaign. Urge your food bank staff, agencies, volunteers, board members, and local supporters to write a personal letter or email about the need, importance, and impact of anti-hunger programs. We have heard directly from Members of Congress how important and persuasive these stories can be. Be sure to send your letters to the district office of your Members of Congress or use the Hunger Action Center to write your own personal email. Remember, the Super Committee process is only the beginning, so it is important to continue to show constituent support for these programs.
