Hurricane Updates

Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana is continuing to respond to the effects of Hurricane Gustav and preparing to assist individuals who live in areas threatened by Hurricane Ike. In addition to working with regional food banks, government agencies, and public safety offices throughout the Louisiana, we are partnering with our network of 217 faith-based and nonprofit members who will be among the first to respond with emergency hunger relief.

Member agencies are asked to contact their regional Second Harvest representative to give a status report of their facilities and an assessment of the current needs for food and supplies.

Since the landfall of Gustav, our network has distributed nearly 2 million pounds of food and provided more than 1,562,500 meals to residents of south Louisiana. With your help we can do more. Donate to Second Harvest Food Bank and help us to Feed Hope across south Louisiana.

LFBA Press Releases

In 2007, for the first time ever, the Louisiana Food Bank Association (LFBA) approached the state legislature for funding to combat the urgent hunger crisis across Louisiana. That year, against all expectations, LFBA received $5 million and purchased over 9.8 million pounds of food from Louisiana farmers, fishermen, vendors and wholesalers to feed hungry individuals in all 64 parishes.

This year, with a new Governor, Agriculture Commissioner and legislative leaders, there were new challenges to face in the pursuit of state funding: informing new lawmakers of the magnitude of the need for food assistance in every corner of the state; updating new committee chairpersons and key committee members on the successes achieved because of last year’s funding thanks to LFBA and state government joint efforts; and comprehensive documentation of both the impact of dollars received, and the new strains placed on the system by current troubled economic times for working families.

The result of these efforts was a continuation of funding for the LFBA, a total of $5 million for the new fiscal year.
