 Map the Meal Gap:  This groundbreaking 2011 study shows that one in five children in Louisiana are struggling with hunger.

The study, updated yearly with new data, also reveals that there are families struggling with hunger in every county in America. Nationally, one in six Americans overall is food insecure.

Map the Meal Gap provides the following data for south Louisiana, by Parish, in an interactive map format:

  • The percentage of the population who is food insecure;

  • The percentage of children that is eligible for assistance from federal nutrition programs like Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), free or reduced-price school meals, and others; and,

  • The percentage of children that is not eligible for assistance from federal nutrition programs like Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), free or reduced-price school meals, and others.
