It is estimated that more than 800 million pounds of wholesome food is discarded from retail grocery stores in the United States. Second Harvest Food Bank partners with the grocery store sector to keep that food out of the waste stream and into our communities. Second Harvest’s Food Sourcing Team works closely with store managers and receiving teams to sort close-to-code food that is no longer shelf-worthy but is still wholesome and reserve that food for pickup by our refrigerated trucks, or directly by our member agencies. We are proud to count Walmart, Sam’s Club, Winn-Dixie and Kroger among our national grocery partners with Rouses, Breaux Mart and other regional and neighborhood markets among our local partners. In 2014 Second Harvest saved over 10 million pounds of wholesome food from the waste stream and distributed that food to members of the Southern Louisiana community.
Grocers who would like to donate should call Susan Goss, Retail Store Donations Coordinator at 504-729-2846 to discuss setting up a partnership. Our team will meet with your store management team to explain the value of donating and best donation practices. Pickups will be scheduled 2-3 times week depending on volume and needs of the store. Less consistent donations can be arranged on a “will-call” basis with pickups occurring within 48 hours.
