WHAT IS SNAP? The U.S. Department of Agriculture Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as Food Stamps, helps people with low incomes make ends meet by providing monthly benefits to buy food. SNAP provides qualifying applicants with a pre-paid EBT card that works like a debit card and gets reloaded monthly. This card can be used for food purchases at most grocery stores and farmers’ markets. In Louisiana, the Department of Children and Family Services administers SNAP.

SUMMARY: The role involves assisting neighbors with submitting SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) applications to the DCFS for eligibility determination. This includes completing applications over the phone using the Ring Central app, providing in-person assistance at partner agencies, and following up with previous SNAP applicants. The majority of the time will be spent on the phone with clients, completing applications, and recording data in Excel. The position requires an average of 20 hours per week, depending on the number of application assistance requests received.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Contact SNAP referrals for SNAP application assistance.
    • Schedule SNAP application appointments
    • Answer general SNAP questions
  • Complete SNAP applications over the phone with clients.
  • Record required data in an Excel spreadsheet upon the completion of each interview.
  • Follow up with our previous SNAP applicants to see if they were able to receive SNAP benefits.
  • Attend events to conduct SNAP outreach

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Able to efficiently navigate Excel and the SNAP online application system.
  • Friendly and patient demeanor with SNAP clients on the phone and in person.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy with data entry.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Complete training for the SNAP Application Assistance program.
  • Complete Ring Central Training.
  • Complete DCFS-required Civil Rights Training.
  • Learn what data is needed and enter it into the Excel spreadsheet for tracking purposes.
  • Attend Feeding Louisiana meetings with other assisters and DCFS to keep abreast of new information and trouble shooting techniques.  

 

TRAINING:

  • Attend the initial meeting to meet the program manager and learn more about the SNAP Application Assistance program and volunteer roles.
  • Shadow a SNAP application appointment being completed
  • Shadow a SNAP application being completed via Ring Central.
  • Complete a SNAP application appointment with a program manage sitting in. Complete the necessary paperwork.
