 Community Kitchen Summer Feeding Program at Second Harvest Food Bank

Summer Feeding provides low-income children enrolled in Orleans and Jefferson Parish summer camps with a free lunch and snacks each day.  All of the meals are prepared in the Community Kitchen located at 700 Edwards Ave in Elmwood and then sent out for delivery.  This year’s Summer Feeding Program will aim to deliver 3,000 to 4,000  lunch meals and snacks daily to approximately 3,000 children.

About AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associates
AmeriCorps operates a short-term program during the summer months known as VISTA Summer Associates. AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associates will serve a 10 week term at participating anti-hunger and anti-poverty organizations in 12 states to build capacity, implement new projects and provide technical support to organizations in underserved communities.  This year, the Corporation for National and Community Service has awarded several AmeriCorps positions to Second Harvest to assist with this year’s Summer Feeding program.

To meet our needs, Second Harvest is seeking committed individuals over the age of 18 to fill AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associate roles working as field representatives, administrative assistants and in meal production for a 10-week term from May 30th – August 7th. Associates must be able to commit to the entire 10-week term.

Criteria for Consideration as Participant in the AmeriCorps VISTA Program:

  • Associated must be at least 18 years of age at the time of placement (May 30, 2017)
  • Associates must serve on a full-time basis during the project period
  • Associates must be a U.S. Citizen, National or Legal Resident
  • Associates must not be listed on the National Sex Offenders Public Registry

Associates Receive:

  • A $1,222.22 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award or a $287.70 summer end-of-service stipend
  • On-site orientation and training
  • A bi-weekly living allowance of $449.08 to cover necessities during service
  • Involvement in the AmeriCorps VISTA Alumni Network and eCommunity

Associates Do Not Receive:

  • Health Care
  • Life Insurance
  • Child Care Allowances
  • Relocation Allowances
  • Sick or Personal/Vacation Time- Holidays are Allowable as Days Off

 2017 Position Descriptions – Associates will be assigned to the following positions

Field Representative:

  • Must be 21 years or older
  • Must be able to pass a Motor Vehicle Report
  • Using Second Harvest company vehicles, will be responsible for delivering correct number of meals to Summer Feeding sites on a daily basis
  • Assist with conducting site visits and monitoring of off-site feeding locations throughout Greater New Orleans
  • Record food temperatures, ensure accurate meal counts and comfortable working on a touch screen tablet
  • Serve as a program representative for sites, communicate professionally
  • Perform other kitchen duties as time permits
  • Must have a positive and willing attitude to work in a fast-paced environment with a diverse group of people
  • Work hours: 8:30am-4:00pm, Monday-Friday

Administrative Assistant:

  • Must be 21 years or older
  • Must be able to pass a Motor Vehicle Report
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Using personal vehicle, assist with conducting visits and monitoring of off-site feeding locations throughout Greater New Orleans
  • Assist with maintaining files, meal counts, data entry, and efficient communication with feeding sites
  • Must have a positive and willing attitude to work in a fast-paced environment with a diverse group of people
  • Computer proficiency required
  • Work hours: 8:30am-4:30pm, Monday-Friday

Meal Production Assistant:

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Performing various tasks to aid in meal production in commercial kitchen: working alongside and leading community volunteers, performing various kitchen duties, packing/labeling meals, checking food deliveries for quality/consistency, stocking supplies, chilling/bagging food, monitoring food temperatures/safety/sanitation, packing pallets, cleaning, sweeping, mopping, washing dishes and other kitchen duties as assigned
  • Must have a positive and willing attitude to work in a fast-paced environment with a diverse group of people
  • Work hours: 8:00am-4:00pm, Monday-Friday
