Kids Helping Kids

“Because it’s fun and I like helping other people.”

That is how one young volunteer describes Tuesday mornings at Second Harvest’s Bayou Distribution Center in Houma, where she serves with her family. In the summer, when school is out and families feel the strain, her words carry extra meaning. This is kids helping kids.

LaShondra Glover, community outreach manager, sees the family each week. “They are awesome and a joy to be around,” Glover says. “The kids do an amazing job.” Week after week, the family shows up ready to work and help pack food that will reach children and families across South Louisiana.

Their mother wants her children to learn that service to others is a shared responsibility. On the drive home, she tells them, “When we all do a little, we can get a lot done.” It is a simple idea, but it speaks to the way summer hunger works in real life. A small act can help fill a bag with food. A few hours of service can help another child eat. Each Tuesday gives this family a way to help children they may never meet but whose need is real.

That is what makes this family’s weekly routine so moving. They are showing their children that hunger is a community concern, and that even young hands can help meet the need. In a season when more families need support, that example means the most.
