Preparing for Hurricane Sally

2020 has been a historic year for emergency response by Second Harvest. Since the beginning of the pandemic emergency, our staff and volunteers have distributed more than 30 million pounds of food, double the amount for the same period a year ago. Then, Hurricane Laura slammed into Southwest Louisiana, and we’ve so far delivered more than a half-million pounds of emergency supplies.

Now, Southeast Louisiana is bracing for Hurricane Sally, a slow-moving storm expected to come ashore with at least Category-2 winds of 100 miles per hour. Forecasters warn of the possibility of flooding and major power outages, not only for our South Louisiana service area, but for our neighbors in Mississippi and Alabama as well.

Our team will continue to respond to the two ongoing emergencies for as long as it is safe to do so, and are prepared to respond to Sally’s impact as soon as the roads are safe to travel. We are working with local emergency officials to pre-stage meals and food for shelters, and, as with every storm, are partnering with state and federal emergency officials as well.
