Hunger Doesn’t Take a Vacation – and Neither Do We!

For families already facing tight budgets, the absence of school breakfast and lunch can create an immediate and urgent gap. The result is a seasonal spike in food insecurity, especially in underserved communities.

Through our Community Kitchens, Second Harvest’s summer feeding program bridges this gap to ensure that the summer remains a season of reliable access to meals – not childhood hunger.

Across four Community Kitchens located in New Orleans, Houma, Lake Charles, and Abbeville – our kitchen teams work alongside volunteers to prepare and deliver breakfast and lunch to thousands of kids across South Louisiana during the summer. Each day, staff and volunteers transform ingredients into nourishing, ready-to-eat meals for children in summer programs, as well as homebound seniors and families experiencing food insecurity.

These efforts are amplified through strong community partnerships. By working with local organizations, growers, volunteers, and program sites, Second Harvest ensures meals reach children where they are – whether at summer camps, community centers, or neighborhood programs.

Summer meals are only possible because of supporters like you. Every dollar donated, every hour volunteered, and every voice raised in awareness helps extend the reach of these kitchens during the summer – one prepared meal at a time! Together, our motto is “Hunger doesn’t take a vacation – and neither do we!”
