In the US, about 30% of our food goes uneaten, which means roughly 3 million tons of wholesome food is discarded from the retail sector each year (ReFed). Second Harvest Food Bank partners with retail stores to get that food to local communities that need it. This is a huge part of how we feed the 1 in 6 Louisianans that struggle with food insecurity.
Joining the retail program actually saves stores money through tax benefits, reduced dumpster/composting/rendering costs and eliminating labor hours spent on the de-packing and disposal process. It also helps the environment by protecting fresh water and reducing the release of greenhouse gases.
Retailers and wholesalers who would like to donate should contact Food Sourcing Manager Jake Kelston at jkelston@no-hunger.org or at 504-729-6338 to set up a partnership. Our team will meet with your team to provide guidance and helpful documents for staff, so that you are set up for success.
