Glad Tidings for South Louisianians

At Second Harvest, many of our pantry partners are seniors who choose to spend their golden years volunteering and giving back. They know what hunger looks like firsthand. They’ve seen its impact in their communities, and they are determined to do something about it.

One of those seniors is Gus, who has run Glad Tidings Food Pantry in Lake Charles since the early 1990s.

With the help of about 40 volunteers — organized into four crews — Glad Tidings opens its doors four mornings a week, providing food and hope to neighbors in need. The pantry thrives thanks to the commitment of these 40 dedicated volunteers — and the food resources provided by Second Harvest through your generosity.

Gus’ story is one of faith, passion, and the unshakable spirit of someone who cares deeply for their community. What began as a personal promise Gus made to God — to serve his neighbors if given the chance — has grown into a decades-long mission of care and compassion.

Seniors like Gus are not slowing down; they’re leading the charge to end hunger in their communities. Their passion shows us all what’s possible when people step up to serve.

By supporting Second Harvest, you are standing alongside Gus and countless seniors like him who prove every day that compassion has no age limit. We couldn’t do it without you!
