Wills and Trusts

Show your commitment to hunger relief and provide for the future of South Louisiana with a gift to Second Harvest Food Bank in your estate plans.

Leaving a legacy helps ensure that Second Harvest will continue to lead the fight against hunger in South Louisiana today and for years to come.  You can make a lasting impact on the lives of many thousands of local children, families and seniors by including Second Harvest in your will, or by naming Second Harvest as a beneficiary of a retirement or savings account, life insurance policy or charitable trust.

If you have already included Second Harvest in your estate plans, please let us know so we can thank you for your generosity.  For more information, please contact Director of Development Heather Sweeney at (504) 729-2839 or hsweeney@secondharvest.org.

Bequests

You can make a charitable bequest by including language in your will that names Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana as the beneficiary of your entire estate, or you can bequeath a specific dollar amount or percentage of your estate to Second Harvest after ensuring your loved ones are cared for.

Beyond making a lasting impact towards ending hunger in South Louisiana, making a charitable bequest has several advantages including easing the estate tax burden on your family and keeping control of your assets during your lifetime.

You may find this sample bequest language helpful when consulting with your attorney:

“I, [name], of [city, state ZIP], give, devise and bequeath the sum of $________ or ______ percent of my estate to Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana, a nonprofit institution incorporated in the State of Louisiana with a business address of 700 Edwards Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70123 and tax identification number 72-0956468 for its unrestricted use and purpose.”

Beneficiary Designations:  Retirement Assets, Savings Accounts and Life Insurance

In addition to leaving a legacy, there may be tax advantages in naming Second Harvest as a beneficiary of your retirement plan assets, bank accounts or a life insurance policy.  Please consult with your attorney or financial advisor for more information.
