Partnering To Help Feed Children
In New Iberia, you’re helping drive a powerful partnership addressing one of the most pressing challenges local children face: food insecurity.
The Boys & Girls Club transforms the lives of children and families in need. Club director D’Andre Hypolite — affectionately called “Mr. Dre” by the kids — works to create a safe, nurturing environment for at-risk youth. His efforts include partnering with Second Harvest to run the Kids Cafe program, a lifeline for children who might otherwise go hungry.
“Kids Cafe ensures every child has access to nutritious food after school, no matter their circumstances,” Mr. Dre explains. The program provides hot and cold meals, prepared to accommodate allergies, religious restrictions, and dietary preferences.
For many of the kids, these meals are the highlight of their day. “We post menus, and kids get so excited about what’s coming,” Mr. Dre shares. “Some even circle their favorite meals in advance.” Beyond nourishment, Kids Cafe integrates with the club’s other after-school activities, offering children a safe space to unwind, complete their homework, and thrive.
During the summer — when school is out — the program expands to serve children breakfast and lunch, further easing the financial and logistical burdens on working parents.
“Parents often joke that their kids will eat them out of house and home,” Mr. Dre says with a smile. “This program is a blessing, providing peace of mind and reliable meals.”
Kids Cafe even improves the children’s well-being and behavior. “When kids are fed, their mood changes,” Mr. Dre notes. “It can turn their whole day around.”
Grateful for the support, Mr. Dre expressed heartfelt thanks to Second Harvest — and donors like you. “It takes a village,” he says. “And together, we’re making a difference.”
